You can get it very early game and until you can actually get a chaos gem, it works great with a basic fire infusion as well. I'm casually playing through right now and used a pyro-knight build. I prefer faster swinging weapons, so I went with a sunlight straight sword. Fireball is nice to just keep range and send it. Most horizontal attacks don't give you the time necessary. At the very least, 24 for 4 spell slots. Unless you feel like you need to use only 2 spells (Chaos Bed Vestige is too good to pass imo).
